It can be hard to figure out what to eat if you are newly diagnosed, which foods are best for you? Your main goal should be to keep your blood sugar under control. Your diet has a major role in preventing and managing your diabetes.
Here are some very important foods for people living with diabetes both type1 and type 2:
Salmon and other fatty fish:
they are great sources of omega 3 and fatty acids. omega 3 has been found to decrease insulin resistance in people with diabetes. moreover, they make you full for longer periods.
Avocado:
are high in fiber low in carbs and have healthy fats. The molecule in avocado may safely reduce insulin resistance.
green leaf vegetables:
Kale, Microgreens, Spinach, Cabbage, mustard greens, and others... are a must-have in a diabetes diet. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C.and iron
Olive oil:
adding extra virgin olive oil to your food is a must. It contains oleic acid which is a fatty acid that was found to control glycemic and lower triglyceride levels.
Flax seeds and Chia seeds:
The fiber in these seeds has been shown to lower blood sugar levels by slowing the rate at which the food passes the gut.
Nuts:
such as pistachios, walnuts, and almonds can improve blood glucose levels and they are a really great option for snacks, easy to have, however, make sure there is not much salt or flour added to them.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Although they are made with apples the sugar in them is fermented into acetic acid. and studies show that it can help control blood sugar levels and lower A1C levels. Always buy raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar. and make sure to take it with a straw to not damage your teeth. and begin with one teaspoon mixed in a glass of water.
Remember this especially if you are new these foods can help but they are not meant to replace your medication. You can eat other food too but always pay attention to the quantity and how frequently you eat during the day.
